Review of Leeni album Are We There Yet?

Simple yet sumptuous, Leeni's pop melodies flow across your skin like

aloe, seeping in and changing you in the subtlest of ways. Her voice,

soft and breathy, sighs lyrics that turn around and bite you when you

least expect it. By turns obsessive and morbid, yearning and hopeful,

sad and resigned, Leeni's words float on shimmering tunes with echoes

of everything from the Beatles to the Magnetic Fields, but all these

influences are distilled into something distinctly Leeni-esque. The

production of her cd is cheap and a little dirty, but that only makes

the songs more potent, the way a picture that's been crumpled then

smoothed out can stick in your memory far longer than a crisp, clean

image. This is the soundtrack for a movie that David Lynch has yet to

make.

It's always so cool to hear people's very personal experiences with my songs. I love hearing that I'm on people's iPods and they listen to me when they go for a walk - or that they wake up to me, or go to sleep to me...or drive to me. It's always really neat. I never thought even a tiny distribution of a homemade CD could really become a part of people's lives like that. It feels good and it makes me happy that I did it. Production value be damned! People still want to listen to it.

Dear friends,

You can't imagine how cool it is to look up from the stage and see this WALL of AWESOME people smiling back at you.

Warm fuzzies doesn't even begin to describe it.

Thank you all for being there. I had a great time. In fact, it was my best/favorite show thus far.

Those of you who were not there, here's a detailed set list:

Hello (on omnichord)
Raw footage for a montage (on omnichord) - New(ish) song
Magic Machine (on electric git)
Pretty Girl (on electric git)
Dream Away (on omnichord) - NEW DooWop song
Everlong (on electric git) - Foo Fighters Cover
Gorgeous (on electric git) - NEW song I wrote for Nenu
Unravel (omnichord) - Bjork cover
Over and Over (on ukelele)
Ballad of the Broken Hearted Girl (on ukelele)
Nothing in Between (electric git)
Inside Out (electric git)
Live Asleep (omnichord)

The audio situation made me happy because the sound board was close enough to the stage that I could use my headphones as a monitor. Not struggling to hear myself makes any show way more comfortable! My vocal effects box sounded very pretty as well. I was pleased with the set all around.

Let's hope TOST LOUNGE works that well. (March 14th, 9pm)

ISC (International Songwriting Competition) announced their semi-finalists - and, sadly, I am not on the list.

Out of thousands that submitted, they could only choose 40 artists per category to move in this round.

I'm still happy I made it as far as I did - but it is a let down.

Oh well - the beat goes on.

I am back to actively booking shows again. So, hopefully soon there will be more dates on my calendar. I am totally sold out of CDs, so I'll be making new (prettier ones) for sale and recording new stuff in addition to that. I've got my work cut out for me!

NEXT SHOW: Feb 6th, Hopvine, 10pm. Details on www.leeni.us

Come to the Re-bar for the Ukelooza!!

Starts at 7:30 pm.

Here's the blurb from "The Stranger Suggests":

Ukelooza
(BENEFIT AND AUCTION) There is a nice little organization called Rain City Projects that helps Northwest playwrights with travel grants and publishing, but you don't care about that. You care about improvised text and performance by the Vis-à-Vis Society, comic theater by Troy Mink, jazzy tunes by Mamie Lavona and Her White Boy Band, the live auction, and more ukuleles than anyone cares to count. (Re-bar, 1114 Howell St, 233-9873. 7:30 pm, $10, 21+.)

Of course, I will be playing, too - but *le sigh* I'm not noteworthy enough to mention...

...yet...

Thanks to all who showed up last minute to Conor Byrne last night! I'm sorry for those that missed the set - but it's always good to see your faces :)

Here's what you missed:

SET LIST
Guitar:
Magic Machine
Pretty Girl
Inside Out (sung to Jesus)
Everlong (Foo Fighters cover)
Ukelele:
Motion Picture Soundtrack (Radiohead cover)
Over and Over

Short set but it went well, allthough there were some sound issues. Namely that I couldn't hear 3/4s of my set myself. But...whatchugonnado?

The place was packed thanks to you all and the Kate Noson fan club! That girl knows so many people!!

It was indeed a good time.

My next gig is MONDAY, the 23rd at the RE-BAR for Ukelooza. I'll be playing 1-2 songs on ukelele. Please come! It'll be cool!

Following that, I have a gig on Feb 6th at the Hopvine on 15th in Capitol Hill. Should be swingin'.

I am all out of CDs at this time. There are still some available at CDbaby.com and it's always available for download on iTunes. It may be a while before I make more - cause I want to make them pretty this time :) -- but in the meantime, keep up with my MySpace profile. I'll be putting rotating free downloads of new songs on there soon! Right now, you can download Perfection Interrupted for free! Next, I'll be posting my ukelele original "Over and Over"....so you can hear it over and over...for free :)

Stay smooth, everyone. And remember, Leeni loves you.

I received FOUR emails today from the ISC.

EACH of them told me that my songs have now advanced to the THIRD round of judging.

But, unbeknownest to me, I have FOUR songs that have been selected: Death's Little Brother, Ballad of the Broken Hearted Girl, Nothing in Between and Into the Sea!!

For some reason, I didn't get the email about the last two songs advancing to the second round - but they're all in the third.

So, this is NOT the semi-finals. The third round is the LAST round before the semi-finals.

I should know in a few days if I made it to semi-finals/finals.

Double-cross your fingers!!!

REMINDER:
CONOR BYRNE PUB TONIGHT!!! 5140 Ballard Ave. NW - 9pmish.
:)
I'll be playing my ukelele tonight - don't miss it!

Also --- UKELOOZA NEXT MONDAY, the 23rd at the REBAR!! 7:30pm start time.

I made two very exciting eBay purchases this week:

1.) a Theramin!!! - I've been wanting one FOREVER and this one is in the shape of a lighted disco ball!!

2.) a Korg electribe drum machine:
-- and it was a steal. Bought it from a guy in Bellingham who doesn't charge shipping. He said it would be in my sweet hands by Monday. I tested one of these babies out at Guitar Center once. It's bad ass and professional quality.
